George Berkeley veröffentlichte 1710 mit 25 Jahren seine zweite philosophische Schrift "Eine Abhandlung über die Principien der menschlichen Erkenntnis". In „Abhandlung über die Prinzipien der menschlichen Erkenntnis“ legt Berkeley seine philosophische Position dar, die sich gegen den zeitgenössischen Empirismus, vor allem jedoch gegen John Locke richtet. Zwar meint auch Berkeley, daß (anders als bei den Rationalisten) alle Erkenntnis sinnlich vermittelt sei, aber er hält die Annahme einer außerhalb des Bewußtseins existierenden realen Welt für unhaltbar. Dagegen lautet sein Grundsatz: »Esse est percipi«, d.h. das Sein, die Existenz eines Dings, besteht lediglich darin, wahrgenommen werden zu können. In dieser Schrift erläuterte er die beiden Grundprinzipien seines sensualistischen Ansatzes: "Es gibt etwas, das wahrgenommen wird." und "Es gibt etwas, das wahrnimmt." Berkeley leistete damit einen in der Öffentlichkeit kaum gewürdigten Beitrag zum Diskurs der Gelehrtenrepublik seiner Zeit. Es ging damals u. a. darum grundlegend neue Konzepte zu entwickeln, die aus der Sackgasse des Leib-Seele-Dualismus hinausführten, wie ihn die alte scholastische Philosophie, aber auch noch Descartes und cartesianisch orientierte Philosophen vertraten. Vor allem neue Forschungsergebnisse in der Medizin zeigten, dass die dualistische Denkweise ungeeignet war, diese nachvollziehbar zu erläutern. Berkeley behauptete – radikaler als Locke -, dass er weder die Substanz "Materie" noch die Substanz "Geist" für philosophisch begründbar hielte.
