The Anarchist Cinema examines the complex relationships that exist between anarchist theory and film. It identifies subversive undercurrents in cinema, and uses anarchist political theory as an interpretive framework to analyse filmmakers, genres and the notion of cinema as an anarchic space. The book focuses on three key areas. Firstly, it considers the notion that cinema is an inherently subversive space, based around fears of unruly (predominantly working class) audiences. Secondly, it establishes criteria for an 'anarchist' film by looking at a range of characteristics that express anarchist philosophy featured in a number of popular movies. In doing so, it demonstrates that the 'anarchic' in film is not hidden in obscure corners of cinematic culture, and instead is a theme that has traversed arthouse, popular and underground films. Thirdly, the book examines the place of underground and DIY filmmaking within the wider context of anarchist cinema.

Alphonso Lingis is an original among American philosophers. An eloquent and insightful commentator on continental philosophers, he is also a phenomenologist who has gone to live in many lands. Dangerous Emotions continues the line of inquiry begun in Abuses, taking the reader to Easter Island, Japan, Java, and Brazil as Lingis poses a new range of questions and brings his extraordinary descriptive skills to bear on innocence and the love of crime, the relationships of beauty with lust and of joy with violence and violation. He explores the religion of animals, the force in blessings and in curses. When the sphere of work and reason breaks down, and in catastrophic events we catch sight of cosmic time, our anxiety is mixed with exhilaration and ecstasy. More than acceptance of death, can philosophy understand joy in dying? Haunting and courageous, Lingis's writing has generated intense interest and debate among gender and cultural theorists as well as philosophers, and Dangerous Emotions is certain to introduce his work to an ever broader circle of readers.

Donny is an eighteen year old college boy who struggles with his independence. Passing by the local finishing school for girls on a daily basis, he develops a growing curiosity about this traditional girl’s institute. When hearing some rather curious activities taking place on the other side of the school’s boundary wall, his inquisitiveness swiftly gets the better of him. In an impetuous act he scales a tree with the intention of spying upon the unseen girls. His clumsy attempt at peeping sees him fall from the boundary wall to land inside of the school grounds. With no easy way out available and in an attempt to avoid being discovered, he flees further into the school grounds, only to be caught red handed by some very surprised schoolgirls that have no intention of letting him go easily. He is about to experience the humiliation of being forced into schoolgirl dress. Kept in this way against his will and fearful of discovery by the staff, he endures further indignities being meted out that culminate in a failed escape attempt and being subjected to school punishment, with one male teacher showing a less than professional interest in this new girl’s welfare. Follow Donny’s fate at the hands of his tormentors, as he’s feminised and played with in the most intimate of fashions by his schoolgirl captors. He knows he must escape their clutches, but his resolve to do so could be sorely tested. This is an erotic story of forced schoolgirl feminisation, including sexual scenes of masturbation, oral sex and feminisation. All characters depicted are over 18 years. This Fall 2004/Spring 2005 (III, 1&2) double-issue of Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge demonstrates the extent to which the sociology of self-knowledge as advanced by this journal from its inception can serve as both a course topic as well as a pedagogical strategy in teaching sociology and related subjects. The issue includes student papers of various faculty at UMass Boston and a symposium of student (and faculty) papers organized by Khaldoun Samman from Macalester College. Samman had earlier taken the step of turning his senior seminar into a course on the sociology of self-knowledge and encouraging his students, all graduating seniors at Macalester, to subject their own lives and “troubles” to their sociological imaginations. The student papers included in the issue as a whole are highly demonstrative of how self and socially critical and liberating the sociology of self-knowledge can be. Authors use a variety of class and outside readings, as well as films and documentaries, to explore in-depth currently unresolved issues in their lives, while making every effort to move in-depth to relate their personal troubles to broader public issues. Contributors include: Deborah D’Isabel, Claudia Contreras, Katherine Heller, Rebecca Tink, Caitlin Farren, Haing Kao, Harold Muriaty, Rachel A. DeFilippis, Lee Kang Woon, N.I.B., Sharon Brown, Jennifer Lambert, Anonymous, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce, Khaldoun Samman (also as journal issue guest editor), Ellen Corrigan, Jeremy Cover, Jesse Mortenson, Jessica Sawyer, and Mohammad Tamdgidi (also as journal editor-in-chief). Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge is a publication of OKCIR: The Omar Khayyam Center for Integrative Research in Utopia, Mysticism, and Science (Utopystics). This broad-based collection of essays is an introduction both to the concerns of contemporary folklore scholarship and to the variety of forms that folk performance has taken throughout English history. Combining case studies of specific folk practices with discussion of the various different lenses through which they have been viewed since becoming the subject of concerted study in Victorian times, this book builds on the latest work in an ever-growing body of contemporary folklore scholarship. Many of the contributing scholars are also practicing performers and bring experience and understanding of performance to their analyses and critiques. Chapters range across the spectrum of folk song, music, drama and dance, but maintain a focus on the key defining characteristics of folk performance – custom and tradition – in a full range of performances, from carol singing and sword dancing to playground rhymes and mummers' plays. As well as being an essential reference for folklorists and scholars of traditional performance and local history, this is a valuable resource for readers in all disciplines of dance, drama, song and music whose work coincides with English folk traditions.
